A WEST END TRADITION SINCE 1971
It's a family tradition that stems back to the 1800's in Holland. Gary Blokhuis has taken the family secrets - and built on them - to produce consistently outstanding meals at his restaurant on Bloor Street West, Kingsway Fish & Chips.
Established in 1971, Kingsway Fish & Chips attracts patrons from all over the GTA, and people from as far away as the United States and Australia make a point of visiting the restaurant when they are back in town.
Gordon runs the restaurant with his wife Rachel, under the guidance of his parents Gary and Doris; the warmth of this family operation is immediately obvious when you walk in. Attractively decorated, the room features a collection of over 300 teapots from around the world. Doris and Rachel collect them on her travels - and customers have also got into the act. They will return from a trip and present Doris with a new teapot, which speaks to the special relationship the family has with their guest.
But the ambiance of the restaurant is only part of the equation. The main event here is the fish and chips. Only halibut is used and the recipe, perfected over the course of nearly fifty years in the business, is a carefully guarded secret! Other selections on the menu include grilled salmon, trout and shrimps.
Kingsway Fish & Chips is a frequent recipient of community accolades. When local papers run readers surveys of what's best in the area, this restaurant always comes out on top. And in 2002 it was named "Retailer of the Year" by the Etobicoke Chamber of Commerce.
Gary makes a point of giving back to the community which has made his restaurant such a success. He is a great supporter of both the Dorthy Ley Hospice and the Gatehouse, a safe house for abused children.
Kingsway Fish and Chips is a west end Landmark - and deservedly so. Come in and judge for yourself.
